Frequently Asked Questions About Swimming Pools

Frequently Asked Questions

Here we have listed some of the questions we are regularly asked about swimming pools.

How much chlorine should I add to my pool?

Normally for domestic pools we recommend the Free Chlorine level is maintained at about 2ppm, this can be reduced to a lower residual level should you use a correctly sized UV and/or Ozone sanitiser system. For more information on the UV and Ozone systems available please call us.

01

What should the pH of my pool be?

The pH level in you pool should remain between 7.2 and 7.6. If your pH is too high the chlorine becomes less effective but if it's too low you may find the swimming pool water starts to irritate your skin. A low pH level can also damage swimming pool liners.

02

What type of chlorine should I use?

Chlorine is available in many forms and types but for domestic use, either granular or tablet forms are normally suitable. Many people choose to use tablets as they find it an easier way of maintaining a constant level of chlorine in the pool. Should you decide to use tablets please make sure you use the correct type of difference feed and don't leave them to dissolve in the skimmer as you will cause yourself issues down the line! Should you use granular chlorine make sure to pre dissolve it before adding it to the pool.

03

How often should I back wash the sand filter on my pool?

As a rule on domestic pools, we would normally recommend backwashing the sand filter every two weeks. A good thing to do is to look at the pressure on the gauge fitted to the sand filter when the filter has just been back washed, as the filter becomes more blocked from filtering out debris from the pool the pressure within the filter will increase. Once this increases by around 10psi then it is time to backwash the filter.

04

How much does it cost to run a swimming pool?

This is something that cannot easily be answered but the main cost of running a swimming pool will be the cost of heating the swimming pool water. Therefore it makes sense to invest in a cost effective system of heating the pool water, either a heat pump or solar water heating would be recommended. The addition of a quality cover will also make a drastic difference to the running cost of the swimming pool as most of the swimming pools water is lost from the waters surface.

05

How much does it cost to install a swimming pool?

The cost of installing a swimming pool can drastically vary depending on what you are wanting to get from your pool. The cost of a quality in ground pool supplied and installed by ourselves start from around £40,000 but can be in excess of £200,000.

06

When should I change the sand in my sand filter?

We recommend to help maintain clear pool water that the sand within your sand filter is replaced at least once every 4 years. Not changing the sand regularly enough will drastically effect the filter's ability to filter the pool water adequately to maintain a crystal clear pool.

07

When should I change my swimming pool liner?

On average a bag type swimming pool liner should last around 7 years and a welded on site swimming pool liner should last well in excess of 15 years. We are able to carry out replacements of bag liners and on site swimming pool liners.

08

How long does it take to install a swimming pool?

We specialise in one piece swimming pools, with our one piece swimming pool we are able to install swimming pools very quickly when needed. In as shorter time frame as two weeks from breaking ground to swimming in the pool.

09

What is the best way to heat my pool?

If a new swimming pool heating system is to be installed we would always recommend installing an air source heat pump due to the high level of efficiency that they offer compared to traditional methods of heating a swimming pool.

10

Can a slatted safety cover be added to my pool?

We are able to retro fit slatted safety covers to virtually all swimming pools with the absolute minimal disruption due to many of the covers we install having integral solar panels most of the time. So we don't need to worry about getting power to them as all of the covers we install have wireless controls.
